More often than not, it takes time before foster dogs get used to their temporary home. With that, it’s important to acknowledge that some pooches are a flight risk. This is caused by their fear of the new environment and unfamiliar situations.
Dylan, an eight-year-old Coonhound, escaped from his foster home in New Jersey. He was gone for more than a week, but his foster mom didn’t stop looking for him. Thankfully, someone discovered him stuck in an unusual spot.
Here’s Dylan’s story.
Trapped inside a drain pipe
After Dylan was transferred from a North Carolina facility to a shelter called Jericho’s Wish Animal Rescue, a woman named Shellinda Hardie decided to foster him. But the dog ran away from Hardie’s home, prompting the foster mom to reach out to her community for help.
Over a week after he went missing, Hardie’s neighbors found Dylan in a narrow drainage pipe. The dog’s barks actually led them to him.
Rescuing Dylan proved to be difficult, as he was already too deep. Hardie decided to call 911 to recover the dog more quickly.
Dylan is safe
Police officers, firefighters, electric crew workers, and a handful of public employees came together to pull Dylan out of the pipe. They dug the ground to reach the pipe where the dog was.
The loud noise forced Dylan to move toward the exit where firefighters were on standby. At last, he was out after a week of not having food and water.
The rescue operation took a total of nine hours.
Rescuers then took Dylan to an animal hospital where it was discovered that he was in bad shape. He had burns on his elbows and paws, and there were ticks all over his body.
It took a while for Dylan to recover. But thankfully, his foster family stayed beside him.
